What Early Learning & Childcare means to us

At Midlothian Sure Start we believe in building the best beginnings for children, working with them and their parents & carers to ensure every child is given the best possible start in life. We have a family focus and offer a wealth of family learning opportunities for the whole family to flourish. Our primary concern is always the wellbeing, happiness, and holistic development of each individual child.

Our professionally trained team, embed children’s rights-based practice. Encouraging children to express themselves and learn through play, offering considered supportive interactions and providing a rich learning environment. We provide healthy snacks and fresh meals are provided from our award-winning caterer.

Funded Nursery Spaces

Midlothian Sure Start work in partnership with Midlothian Council to offer funded early learning and childcare places for eligible two year olds who meet the Government criteria (see below). Children will receive up to 1140 hours worth of free early learning and childcare per year (pro-rata according to child’s eligibility).

Midlothian Sure Start also offers funded early learning and childcare places to 3 to 5 year olds who can receive up to 1140 hours worth of free early learning and childcare per year, depending on the child’s start date.

Who is eligible?

Your child will be eligible if you, as their parent/carer, receive certain benefits. If you are on Child Tax Credit, but not Working Tax Credit, then your earnings can be £18,725 or less.

Self Funded Nursery Spaces

Midlothian Sure Start has a variety of free services available to the community, however parents have fed back over the years that they would like the opportunity to ‘top up’ their hours by paying a fee. Additionally, some children may not be entitled to a free service as they do not meet the criteria of our funding. As such, we have a system in place whereby parents can purchase childcare from the Organisation. This is a low profit service and any profit will be reinvested in the Organisation and its services.
