Positive Steps is the Bonnyrigg branch of Midlothian Sure Start. We provide support
and practical care for twenty two families in the area three days a week. We share
the building at Mount Esk Nursery with Wrap Around Care. With us all working together
we are able to provide a comprehensive service for the children of the families we
are helping. At Mount Esk we have a small garden, a large spacious playroom, (which
we share with the Wrap Around Care Team). We have a private parents room for support
sessions and "tea time" as well as tutors coming in to lead various groups, for example
aromatherapy, family matters, healthy life styles, anger management and art therapy.
Most of these sessions are fun with lots of laughter.
Our groups are very well attended. Parents tell us that without the support of Sure
Start they wouldn't be able to move on with their lives. Parents can get together
with other parents to discuss their children and any problems, which may be making
life difficult. Whilst this is happening, experienced qualified staff care for the
children, with a variety of different themed activities which all link into the curriculum
and help to prepare the older children for nursery. Whilst at the same time assisting
with parenting issues such as potty training or fussy eating.
During the school holidays we operate a summer family play scheme; this enables the
siblings of the children attending our Centre to come too. The play schemes are more
flexible and people can come and go as they please. We have many outings during the
summer, for example North Berwick beach; East Links farm, Edinburgh Festival, swimming
and many local outings, as well as themed days at the nursery.
With the many stresses that today's parents are under, Positive Steps can provide
a safe and confidential haven for parents and children. Our aim is to try to make
life a bit easier for everyone with the provision of an excellent programme for children
and a safe, relaxing atmosphere for parents. We can befriend parents in crisis by
assisting at meetings with Social Services, Police or Women's Aid or any other agency
that parents may become involved with.
We believe that Positive Steps can only grow and grow within Bonnyrigg and we hope
to be able to help many more families in the future.
